The present edition is based on a set of manuscript parts held by the Archivio Musicale of the Basilica of San Petronio of Bologna, and bears their identification number D XII 6.

The editor has transcribed this manuscript into current notation, correcting a few obvious errors and setting off all editorial additions in brackets, which include dynamic markings and tempo indications. The realisation of the basso continua part is editorial. The piano reduction version adopts some of the editor’s continua part in appropriate places, and these sections and individual notes are also bracketed.

The scoring calls for two violins, an obbligato cello and a double-bass (presumably associated with one or more cellos) and specifically calls for organ continua. It is noteworthy that there are no viola parts and, judging from the texture of the music, which is quite tightly woven between the trumpet, violins and obbligato cello, the composer did not in fact include the viola in this work.
