Isabel Mundry (*1963) Orchestra Fragments to Beethoven
[pno,orch] 2020 duration: 16'
World premiere: Cologne, Philharmonie, February 9, 2020
Commissioned by the Gürzenich-Orchester Cologne and the Kunststiftung NRW
The five Orchestra Fragments to Beethoven were created in the Beethoven Year 2020 for the project “Allein Freyheit”of the Gürzenich-Orchester Cologne. Together with the pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard and the dramaturg Patrick Hahn, conductor François-Xavier Roth put together excerpts from Beethoven works with contemporary music of Francesco Filidei, Helmut Lachenmann and Bernd Alois Zimmermann for a two-hour program. Mundry’s Fragments serve here as bridges between individual components of the project. They integrate and comment on piano works by Beethoven (Moonlight Sonata, Bagatelles from op. 119) and lead to orchestral sounds of Beethoven and Lachenmann.
