Breitkopf & Härtel mourns the death of Siegfried Matthus

On 27 August 2021, our composer Siegfried Matthus died at the age of 87 after a long illness. As a former master student of Hanns Eisler, Matthus composed over 600 works of all genres and is considered one of the most important composers of the GDR.

Even after 1989, Matthusʼ influence in the field of music theater was particularly formative, evident both in his dramatic musical language and in his nearly 40 years as a composer and dramaturge at the Komische Oper Berlin. In 1990, Matthus founded the internationally renowned Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg with its prestigious Opera Workshop, which he himself directed until 2014.

The composer’s collaboration with the Deutscher Verlag für Musik (since 1992 at Breitkopf & Härtel) began as early as in the 60s. Currently, our publishing program includes around 70 works by Siegfried Matthus. Grateful for many years of shared paths, we would like to express our deepest sympathy to his family and friends.
