Schubert/Denissow: Waltzes Op. 9a, 9b + 18a
for orchestra

world première Essen, February 2, 1997

Edison Denisov’s love of Schubert’s music runs like a red thread throughout his oeuvre. His lifelong veneration of the Viennese master was confirmed again by his completion of the Lazarus fragment, which Denisov brought to term shortly before his death. These waltz orchestrations of 1982, 1984 and 1986 long lay dormant in the Russian composer’s desk before he finally gave his assent to publication (and performance).
