No. 2 of the five great Beethoven overtures
The five-part editorial concept was laid down in spring 2006, and today the editions of the overtures to "Coriolan" op. 62 (PB/OB 14500) and "Egmont" op. 84 (PB/OB 14640) are available in a coproduction with the G. Henle Verlag, and have replaced the traditional Breitkopf editions.
The autograph of the incidental music to „Egmont“ is located at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin – Preußischer Kulturbesitz. It is, however, lacking precisely the Overture, of which only three scribal copies corrected by Beethoven have survived as manuscript sources. Particularly important is the manuscipt preserved in the collections of the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, since this ist he one into which Beethoven entered all the corrections made with respect to the autograph, no doubt during the rehearsals for the first performances.
The third part of the project, the new edition of the overture "Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus" op. 43 is also based on the music text of the Complete Edition published by Henle. We are pleased to be able to offer a performing version of the Urtext that has been edited by Klaus Kropfinger from sources found in a state that is typical of Beethoven: no autograph but various sources bearing corrections by the composer.
Parts 4 and 5 of the project - the new editions of the opera overtures "Fidelio" and "Leonore No. 3" - are scheduled for release in 2007.
