Eisler: Suite for Orchestra No. 3 Op. 26
from the music to the film "Kuhle Wampe"

The “Suite No. 3”, we are confronted with music from the most influential proletarian “talkie” of 1933: “Kuhle Wampe” (Germany 1931, screenplay by Bertold Brecht and Ernst Ottwald, directed by Slatan Dudow). For the first time, Eisler allows the music to function as a counterpoint to the images on screen – in the long sequence “Hetzjagd nach Arbeit” (Desperately searching for work) that is the third movement of the suite, for example. But when all is said and done, it is the song “Solidaritätslied” to a text by Brecht that represents the summit of Eisler’s activities as a composer of “songs for the cause”. It can be heard in the fourth movement of the suite in a wonderfully worked orchestral arrangement.
