Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 in C minor Op. 67
Breitkopf Urtext - ed. by Clive Brown
The "Fifth” got of course a special treatment in our series of new editions of Beethoven’s symphonies. The transmission of the work and the state of the sources are especially complex. The conductor’s score contains only a shortened version of the extensive Critical Report that was published separately in book form (Brown: A New Appraisal of the Sources of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, BV 307). As to the perennial dilemma about whether to repeat the Scherzo or not, this is treated at lenght by Clive Brown. (Our edition allows for performance with or without repetition.)
