The „Köchel“ of the 21st Century
In cooperation with the Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation, Breitkopf & Härtel publishes the latest revision of the Köchel Catalogue
Ludwig von Köchel completed his outstanding catalogue of Mozart’s works in 1862 and since then it has been revised several times. The year 2012 marks the 150th anniversary of Köchel’s “Chronologisch-thematisches Verzeichnis sämtliche Tonwerke Wolfgang Amadé Mozarts” and the Köchel catalogue is still indispensable in relation to Mozart’s oeuvre. The last revision was made in 1964, almost 50 years ago.
The Köchel catalogue provides information about the origin and extent of each work, and also states the location of Mozart’s original manuscripts (autographs), in so far as these were available at that time. The numbers of the works are based on the assumed original chronology and in German are denoted with the abbreviation “KV”, in English with “K.” Köchel completed his catalogue with the Requiem, K. 626, one of Mozart’s last works.
Neal Zaslaw (Cornell University) has now completed his thorough, long-awaited revision of the Köchel Catalogue. In the process he compiled, evaluated and incorporated the results of the latest Mozart research. The new Köchel Catalogue will be published by Breitkopf & Härtrel, the original publisher, in cooperation with the Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation, in a completely new form combining tradition and current trends: the printed edition will appear in German; a comprehensive online version will be available in English in the relevant updated form on the website of the Digital Mozart Edition: http://dme.mozarteum.at.
