Repertoire Tip "Waltzes"
The waltz, a dance that marked the rise of the middle classes, enjoyed widespread, craze-like popularity in the 19th century, when Johann Strauss Jr. was crowned the King of the Waltz. To this day, the dance in ¾ time remains one of the most universally beloved social dances, particularly in its rapid form as the Viennese waltz. Alongside its social function in the dance hall, the waltz, as part of our collective socio-musical memory, also increasingly provided composers with a highly stylized musical formula to express a sensual joy of life or sentimentality.
