In 1990, the publication of the second edition of the BWV marked special anniversary, for this monumental work was first issued back in 1950 during the Bach commemorative year. Though advanced in years, Wolfgang Schmieder himself undertook the fundamental revision of the work. He was also able to incorporate the results of the research conducted on the occasion of the Bach tricentennial year 1985. The new edition also features the extensive prefaces to the first and second editions in English.
