The listener soon begins to prick up his ears - which is an ideal way to listen to music. For now emerges the second layer in Adriana Hölszky's music, which bursts with imagination and proliferates with fine and precisely calibrated sounds. In a word, it is nothing less than a delight to hear.

When Adriana Hölszky's "Bremer Freiheit" was premiered at the first Munich Biennale for New Music Theater in 1988, the public immediately knew that it had experienced one of the most extraordinary works of contemporary music theater. This was not, however, the jury's opinion, which shied away from awarding the prize for the best composition of the Biennale to this work, which amply deserved it. This speaks for the radicalism of Hölszky's approach, which breaks the conventions of work evaluation, as well as for the need for this radicalism, which was spontaneously palpable. "Bremer Freiheit" portrays tensions and conflicts pulling at Geesche Gottfried, a murderess who mixed poisons and was executed in 1831. At the same time, it portrays a society that beset her with ambiguous morals and sexual lust. Geesche decided that the only way to free herself was by murdering her oppressors with poison, something she practically cultivated. This is basically the topic of the opera. Its subtitle "Singwerk" suggests that it is less concerned with theatrical depiction than with letting the music itself slip into Geesche's inner life. Music becomes Geesche's ear on the world and, like a subjective, hand-held camera, it strengthens her sensation of being beset by adversity. And here we see an essential trait of Hölszky's compositional philosophy: her pronounced tendency to evoke situations of hopelessness, fear and desperate resistance against them.

This calls for powerful musical means which derive directly from the world of gestures. In her earlier years, Hölszky regarded the entire reservoir of avant-garde writing styles as something perfectly natural, less in the sense of experimental expansion than as a very spontaneous but necessary means of expressing excessive emotionality. Her music bursts with the imaginative fantasy of one who listens concentratedly yet with anxiety. It unleashes a profusion of fine-tuned and meticulously calibrated sounds, and is often quite heady in its driven nervousness. This sense of restlessness permeates practically all of Adriana Hölszky's works. It is part of her being and the way she sees existence itself in permanent danger. Asked about the longing for peace that is becoming an increasingly important aspect of our world today, she once succinctly replied: "There is no such thing as peace in itself. True peace arises only where many agitated events come close to reaching an equilibrium among themselves." Hölszky not only writes music that reflects this sense of being hectically beleaguered; as a human being, she also experiences these conditions of tension with an accommodating sensitivity and with the feeling of being permanently haunted and beset. It is first-hand music, as it were, just like the diary notices written by doomed explorers.

It is clear that this interest repeatedly leads Hölszky to the voice and theater. However, her instrumental works as well as her many pieces for voice also fundamentally thrive on the aspect of the boundaries and limits of human existence. The pieces often give the impression of people groping about in a dark room, whereby in their imprisonment, they utopically sense the possibility of light and freedom. This trait already characterizes the early orchestral work "Space" (1979/80), which refers to the cosmogony of the Maori and directs itself musically towards concepts such as "Nothing. Darkness. Question or Search" and "Brilliance. Beauty of the Form in the Spirit." Similar points of reference are also established - as is already suggested by the titles - by the truly hermetically closed string trio "Innere Welten" (1981), "Lichtflug" for violin, flute and orchestra (1990) and the orchestral work "An die Nacht" (1994/2001). In this respect, a work that represents both an extreme and a culminating point is "Tragödia" (1997), a musical stage work grounded in the idea of theatricality itself and constituted solely of instruments and electronics. The action, text, protagonists and voice are radically excluded from this work, which bears the telling subtitle "Der unsichtbare Raum" (The Invisible Space). Disparate events run their course, along with effects that have no clearly establishable causes and cold threats that stab into the void. The sounds take on a concrete form, their colors performing a whirling dance. The range of a hidden drama is delimited, and every sound gesture drives the action further into the unforeseeable. Elements of music theater - a reservoir in which Hölszky culls with great brio - crash wildly against each other, yet without manifesting any simplistic structure of meaning. Nervousness, anxiety, groping in the dark, the uneasy establishing of one's orientation as well as its simultaneous loss - all of this interlocks like some kind of vast, unfathomable machinery.

Adriana Hölszky's musical language has a plasticity that has no equal in music, whether of the past or the present. One often has the impression that inner conflicts, psychological tensions, a deep-felt agitation are directly illustrated in the music, as if a mask is being removed. The world of anxiety in Arnold Schoenberg's Erwartung could be taken as a model for this musical language, which is nevertheless without models. Indeed, it is uniquely incompar-able, since Hölszky is quite possibly the first composer to write music genuinely and with extreme radicalness from the viewpoint of a woman. There is no protective shield of an "as if", no complacent hiding behind an arsenal of technical bravado that can be interpreted as an "I can do the same just as well."
What is important in the works of Adriana Hölszky is their spatial aspect, which is generated by the arrangement of the performers as well as by the means of electro-acoustical support. Of course, the spatial component is less a technical expansion of the musical parameters than a directly expressive element. The sounds surround the listeners, rush up to them from all sides; uncontrollably close, they take on menacing traits. It is as if the listener were beleaguered from all sides in the darkness by sounds that the ear has to situate after moments of danger. The music provokes an intense listening which resembles that of an animal in the dark. To let down one's guard, to allow a waning of the intensity can be deadly.
Adriana Hölszky's works mirror an unholy world of emptiness, anxiety and generally pointless hope. This is supplemented occasionally by sarcasm, bitterness, a love of barbarousness, as well as droll, colorful grimaces, humor or playful lightness. In the semi-theatrical piece "Message" (1990-1993) after Eugène Ionesco's play "The Chairs", the action revolves around an older couple's preparations for a big feast to which no one comes. At the end, the scheduled speaker arrives. But as he is frenetically applauded, he announces that he is deaf-mute and has nothing to say other than to stutter a bit. The music follows all of this closely. It builds a fragile sound world of glass and water, of hyper-activity and expectant idling. It throws itself into the surreal course of these living dead with the pleasure of a physician who listens with his stethoscope for suspicious noises in the lungs as clues for an impaired organism. This is pursued with consequence, death almost always remaining its companion. Hölszky's second opera "Die Wände" (The Walls, 1993-1995) after Jean Genet takes the Algerian War as a backdrop for a duet of the living and the dead, with plastic and complex musical sketches, and simultaneous images that literally scream for music. "It happened to be those walls that separated the world of the living from that of the dead. Actually everything takes place in the realm of the dead, and it is a feast," noted Adriana Hölszky.
The topic of the opera "Giuseppe e Sylvia" (1998-2000) is again the dialogue of life and death. Here, Verdi and the poet Sylvia Plath are fictitiously brought together in a psychoanalytic fashion into a glassily surreal dance in the netherworld that is very much like life on earth, and is woven of filmic editing techniques and spatial sound layers. Significant in this work is the dissolution of the clear contours of the depiction. This is inseparably connected with a permanent mobility of the sounds, with the suspension of traditional narration, as well as with a probing of uncommon possibilities of perception. The composer once said about this work: "The meeting outside of time intends to create preconditions for an opening onto a new view of facts and situations."
